REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), Official Journal L 396, December 2006

This new EU regulation centralizes and simplifies chemicals legislation throughout Europe and entered into force on 1st of June 2007. The declared aim is to improve the level of knowledge about the dangers and risks that chemicals may pose. Companies are expected to assume even more responsibility for the safe handling of their products.

REACH stipulates registration for substances that are either manufactured or imported in quantities greater than 1 tonne annually. This applies not only to pure substances but also to substances used in preparations and in the final product. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has published a list of substances of very high concern on its web site. These substances fulfill the criteria of Article 57 of the above-mentioned REACH Regulation and were identified in accordance with the methods specified by Article 59 of the Regulation (http://echa.europa.eu/chem_data/candidate_list_table_en.asp).
